DS0, DS1, DS3, T1, T3 Dedicated FAQ
What is DS-0 Service?
- A non-switched dedicated service that can be provisioned as a private line point-to-point and multi-point service
- Designed for full duplex transmission of voice, analog data and digital signals transmitting at speeds of 64 Kbs
- The circuit is BI-directional and can move information in both directions
What is T-1/DS-1 voice Service?
A dedicated T1/DS1 voice line is a direct digital connection to the long distance carriers' switch bypassing the local
phone companies' equipment.
The T1/DS1 voice line has 24 channels that each can carry a duplex phone conversation (just like 24 regular phone lines).
With a direct digital connection to the long distance carriers' equipment and a volume/term commitment businesses using
many thousands of long distance minutes per month can receive a much lower rate.
What is T-1/DS-1 Internet Service?
T1 internet service is a 1.54 Mb/s always on digital connection directly to the Internet carriers' router.
This service is not limited by distance as DSL is.
What is T-3/DS-3 Service?
- 28 T1/DS1 circuits bundled together
- 672 DS0 circuits
- Asynchronous transmission (ATM) of digital signals at a speed of 44.736 Mbs
- Any number of the total 672 channels (circuits) can be set up as:
- Outbound long distance
- Toll free 800-inbound
- Internet/Data
What is Frame Relay?
- A transport service that facilitates the exchange of variable length information units (frames) between end-customer connections by
way of assigned Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVC's)
- Networking solutions that allows customers to interconnect multiple networks (offices)over a single access line at each location
- Provides connectivity between and among widely distributed end user locations
- Routers at the customer's premise encapsulate data into frames which are sent over the Frame Relay network
- Customers are assigned pre-established PVC's which identify where to send the data
- Permits the transmission of data at speeds of 56, 64, 112, 128, 192, 256, 320, 384, 512, 768, and 1.536 Mbs using PVC's
What is dedicated point to point?
- A digital voice/data line utilized only by the customer
- Direct connection to the end point
- Flat monthly rate with unlimited usage
- Available as DS0, DS1, DS3
What Is Integrated Access?
- Allows a customer to purchase a singe T-1 pipe and fill it will long distance voice, private line, Internet access and Frame Relay
- Eliminate separate voice and data services
- Faster, more reliable and cheaper than separate services
I was told that my office was too far from the phone companies' central office to get DSL. Can I get an Internet T1 line?
Yes you can. The technology used by internet T1 line service is not limited by distance. You will get a more reliable
and faster Internet connection than DSL can offer. The only draw back is that as the distance goes up, so does the "loop" costs.
What is a "local loop?"
The local loop is the cable that runs from your office to the phone companies' central office giving you a direct connection
to the backbone carriers' equipment.
What is a "backbone"?
A backbone is the major data and voice network that covers the US and the world.
As you drive down the road in your town you see the power and phone lines for your local area. Think of the same thing, but on
a much larger scale carrying much more data and voice channels across the nation and the globe.
Some of the major backbone networks are provided by AT&T, Sprint, UU-Net, Cable and Wireless, Global Crossing, etc.
